Save the Date... and if you aren't tired of the davinci code already, here are some links:)

Sr. Magdalen (the link on her name is to the monastery where she lives in England), author of "Children in the Church Today" and "Conversations with Children" (both excellent books if you haven't read them) will be the speaker at the St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church Annual Fall Women's Retreat. The retreat will be the weekend of October 13-15 here in Portland, OR. Just giving you all a heads up (since most of my five readers of this blog live in the Pacific NW). I am very excited to meet her!

On a completely different note... a priest friend of mine sent me the following links regarding the DaVinci code movie (and book, for that matter) and the gospel of Judas. These are websites that have been developed through the Greek Archdiocese. Mind you, I haven't checked out these sites, yet, just passing the info. on from a reliable/trustworthy source. And, on a side note, who has read the DaVinci Code? I did, and thought that it wasn't that well written of a story, aside from all the historical inaccuracies:)

I tried to read it, but it was so poorly written I couldn't stand it. My current plan is to check out the abridged version of the book on tape and give it another shot. It's the librarian in me. We'll see if I can stand it.

Well, it *was* a page-turner, I have to grant it that. But I got so tired of people saying "isn't that fascinating about Mary Magdalene!" like it was uncovering some long-lost truth or something. I enjoyed reading it, but it seemed like a guilty pleasure to me, like reading a trashy novel. Hibi just got interested in it, because of us talking about the movie, and read it herself (she's actually reading it for a second time now, true to her re-read ad nauseum self).

But, as much as I panned the book, I am getting very interested in the movie. The book had all the right stuff to make a very interesting movie, I think. And, of course, the movie has an Orthodox Christian in it, so we have to see it, right? ;-)

Oh, I did read Children in the Church Today! Long ago. I'm very interested to come. Remind me when the time comes.

I'm also interested in the Women's Retreat, keep me posted (ie - send me reminders, my brain is like a sieve).

Yes, I read DVC for book club, it was very poorly written and the historical accuracies made me want to bang my head on the wall. It's popularity speaks to a lack of historical knowledge about the church, coupled with a longing for something true.

That should be "historical inaccuracies" by the way. Blush.

In the past, we have been able to make overnight arrangements for out of town attendees of the retreat (if we know ahead of time and if there are enough)... I will keep you all posted:)
